How to Keep Your Makeup From Melting in the Heat

Whether you are someone who spends their life savings at Sephora or just someone who wears makeup on a special occasion, then heat is your makeup’s natural enemy.

For those that never sweat, I applaud you and want to bottle your secrets. For the rest of us, 85 degrees plus means uncomfortable boob sweat and melting makeup galore.

For the makeup free person, go on and rock your look! Us makeup junkies will be here trying to keep our faces from ending up looking like the Matchmaker from Mulan.

Keeping your makeup fresh is a well-finessed art. Check out these seven tips to see if they can help you beat the heat this summer.

1. Longwear foundation

Wear a foundation that is built to last. Those winter foundations that are super dewy are great, but they probably won’t stand up well in the heat. If you are looking for full coverage with a long wear time try Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation ($38 Macy’s). That consistency may be too thick for some people during summer, however. Instead, try Revlon’s Color Stay ($9.49 Walmart) or L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation ($12.99 Ulta). Foundation is personal, so give yourself some options to try out.

2. BB/CC Cream/Tinted Moisturizer

If just the idea of foundation on your skin during summer makes you sweat, consider opting for a BB or CC cream or a tinted moisturizer. A highly recommended CC cream by online reviewers is the It Cosmetics CC cream ($38 Ulta). It has great coverage with 50 SPF built in. If you want something with more variety, try the CoverFX Custom Cover Drops ($44 Sephora). You can customize the coverage by adding more or less drops. You can add it to literally any of your favorite face products for some coverage.

3. Prime Your Skin

Primers are great all year round whether it is your face or eyes. If you want your makeup to stick to your skin longer, a primer is a great way to do that. Eye primers should be used year round to give your eyeshadow an extra boost of pigment and longevity. Even if you don’t want to buy crazy expensive face primers, there are drugstore options available. Look for products with Dimethicone in it. Dimethicone is a substance used in many primers. Dimethicone has properties that helps attract makeup to lock it in. If you don’t want to shell out big bucks, try Nivea Men Post Shave Balm ($4.19 Target). Weird – I know, but top makeup gurus like NikkieTutorials swear by it. Give it a try!

4. Bake That Face!

Baking is not a concept often associated with being cool. “Baking” is a concept that was perfected by drag queens and stage performers (like many good makeup tips). The technique is beautifully demonstrated by makeup connoisseur, Wayne Goss, in the video below. It’s called baking because the heats becomes trapped in between the powder and the concealer/foundation. The makeup is essentially cooked until it’s ready to stay all day.

5. Blot, Blot, Blot

Getting all the moisture and oil off your face before you put on foundation is key. Even if you don’t have blotting papers, a tissue can take a lot of the pre-makeup moisture off. Just dab the tissue gently on your face.

Makeup blotting papers are available everywhere. You know those toilet covers in public restrooms? Gross – but they make effective blotting papers in a pinch. If you’re like me and like to purchase your own, try the Tatcha Blotting Papers ($12 Sephora) or the Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets ($4.97 Walmart).

6. Waterproof Everything

To prevent heat sweats from ruining the makeup on your face, try waterproofing everything. Some makeup is only water resistant which is still fine unless you plan on going in the water. Water proof or water resistant doesn’t mean it won’t come off ever, just that it will be long-lasting.

For those Instagram eyebrows, try Anastasia of Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade ($18). You don’t need a lot of product, and it lasts all day on your face. Almost every popular mascara comes in a waterproof version. Waterproof mascara tends to contain more wax. The wax helps the eyelashes stay curled longer (and prevents smudging). Just remember that wearing waterproof mascara everyday has been known to make eyelashes brittle.

7. Set that Face, Beautiful!

Back in the day, some people would actually spray hairspray on their face to set makeup in place. Luckily, there are now plenty of makeup setting sprays on the market. Try these popular options (Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray $30 Sephora; L’Oreal Infallible Pro Setting Spray $16). Just spray your face as directed when you are done makeup application.
