Austin resident John Pointer and his dog Benny are drawing tears across the Internet.
The musician documented the final days of his beloved dog Benny before she fell to cancer, as a way to cope with his loss.
What began as a Goodbye Post on Bennie’s Facebook page became a social media outpouring of grief shared more than 24,000 times so far.
Benny’s Facebook account recounted how the dog suffered with cancer, kidney failure and cardiomyopathy. It detailed how he struggled with headaches, freezing paws, and not being able to move. But it also reflected on the dog’s cherished memories with “my person,” including being able to sleep in his bed one day as they snuggled, and how he would carry him around when he couldn’t move.
Pictures also documented Bennie’s final day, which was filled with visits at home from all his “favorite” people.
“I never want them to cry, it breaks my heart,” the post read. “It’s my job to make them feel better, and I was just a little tired, and cold. I drifted in and out of sleep, and they were always there, making sure I was okay, and chatting with each other.”
Pointer describes telling the story as “exploring the perspective of someone who was so focused on loving others, that Benny wasn’t really aware that his body was shutting down on him.”
When it did shut down on him, however, Pointer and all his friends were there to say goodbye.
My person kissed my face, and looked in my eyes. He was trying not to cry. Doctor Pants Lady gave me a shot of something in the leg. I just looked at my person. He is so awesome. I will always be right by his side.
