Not only do houseplants bring a splash of green indoors, but they have many other benefits as well. Indoor plants reduce air pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde as well as aid in helping you feel less stressed and more creative. So here are our five favorite houseplants that you should add to your space today.
1. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
You might recognize this plant from your childhood as many parents and grandparents had a spider plant or two in the 70s. But that doesn’t mean this plant is any less worthy of sporting a spot in your home. With striped leaves that arch from the center, it’s a beautiful addition to any room. The best part? Eventually, the plant will produce baby Spider Plants called “plantlets!”
2. Lady Palm (Rhapsis excelsa)
No matter the style of your home, the lady palm is a gorgeous addition to any home. This easy to grow plant features fronds in an elegant fan-like pattern that only requires bright indirect light and water only when the top inch of soil is dry. Add a lady palm to your house today!
3. Dracaena (various species)
One of my personal favorites, the Dracaena. Several different types of this plant have been proven to clean and purify the air. Another easy to grow plant, Dracaena’s require slightly moist soil and bright indirect light. With a series of varieties, there is a dracaena for everybody. Try the ‘Janet Craig,’ the ‘Tricolor,’ or the ‘Masangeana’.
4. English Ivy (Hedera helix)
For a plant that literally thrives in a potted environment, try the English Ivy. Perfect for a single pot, a hanging basket, or mixed with other houseplants, you can’t go wrong adding a English ivy into the mix. Needing moderate light in spring and summer and bright light in the fall and winter, this one can have the soil get a tad dry between waterings. Don’t forget about it completely though, unlike your succulents this plant doesn’t like being completely dried out.
5. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum)
Last but not least, the Chinese Evergreen. This plant is also tremendously easy to grow and has beautiful glossy, pale green leaves accented with white markings. It’s okay with just low indoor light and just needs the soil to be slightly moist at all times. The only disadvantage is that it hates cold air, so be sure to keep it toasty and away from cool drafts.
